Choice Points

Choice Points

Interaction rules for the visual novel. 1 The Spine.md owns scene order; protected story events remain Rain's or another character's actions rather than player branches.

Choice Rules

There is one true ending and four comfortable ways to stop reaching it.

  • One pitfall appears in each of Arcs 1–4.

  • Arc 5 has no pitfall or ending choice.

  • A pitfall is not punishment. It is a livable loop in which the story stops advancing.

  • The outbound train is the fixed final scene of the true route.

Retreat is a labeled button. Commitment is not.

The comfortable action can be offered directly: go home, stay, wait, let the offer expire. Leaving a pitfall begins through the Ghost, shown without a label or explanation.

The player does not select a heroic ending from a menu. They reach it by continuing through each loop.

Pitfalls

  1. Rain enters through an ordinary, defensible choice.

  2. Each cycle contains genuinely new material, but the world becomes smaller.

  3. The Ghost appears as a possible exit, later each time and leading further off.

  4. When the Ghost stops appearing, the trap ending begins.

  5. Skipping reaches the ending faster; it does not break the loop.

Comfort matters. A pitfall that is merely boring or obviously wrong cannot tempt the player or respect the character choosing it.

| Arc | Pitfall | What it protects | Entry | Spine continuation | Ending |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| 1 | Go home | the old life | The drift | The follow | Rain admits wrongs he did not commit and resumes the commute. |

| 2 | Become a patient | the present from painful wanting | The archive | Aster's trail ends here | Rain accepts treatment for the ache of wanting, remains for additional sessions, and gradually lets the asylum determine what needs relief next. |

| 3 | Stay in the life | the possible life | The lives | The mountain | Rain never ends the beloved life. It remains valuable and does not need to reveal itself as false. |

| 4 | Let it expire | the decision itself | The amnesty | The unsigned offer | Rain leaves both options open until circumstances close them; the Circuit Line becomes a new commute. |

Together the pitfalls move from preserving the old life, to protecting the present from wanting, to preserving a possible life, to preserving the decision itself. Arc 5 has no corresponding shelter: across Arcs 1–4 the player keeps Rain's story moving; in Arc 5 Rain keeps Rain moving.

False Endings

The surface remains pleasant. Rain's interior voice gradually loses specificity and first-person presence until schedule, weather, and routine are all that remain.

Do not accuse the player, reveal a hidden punishment, or add a moral explanation. The intended response is recognition and grief, not embarrassment.

All four close on the notebook with one line written and the book shut. The second line appears only in the true ending.

Reconvergence

Leaving a pitfall returns to the next spine scene.

  • No persistent reward for leaving early.

  • No penalty for having lingered.

  • No hidden morality score.

  • No required information locked behind replay.

Optional material may reveal Rain or another character, but one attentive playthrough must contain the complete plot.

Arc 3 Lives

The lives are both optional-content space and the Arc 3 pitfall.

  • The player may enter different possible lives and remain for different lengths.

  • They cannot see every life in one run.

  • More lives create a larger graveyard on the mountain, but do not unlock a better ending.

  • The player chooses when to stop entering lives. Rain ends the beloved life himself.

The dream register cannot introduce plot facts required by the spine. It can reveal emotional truth.

Arc 5 Void

The void contains non-branching acts of commitment while memory, interface, and music return. There is no retreat option, wrong answer, or hidden branch.

Rain's refusal of Vesper is not a player choice. Neither is the final train departure. These belong to Rain after the player has helped him reach them.

Protected Non-Choices

  • Rain misreads the target during Roxana's Melt. Do not offer the correct tactical option.

  • Rain ends the beloved life himself. Do not make the player click to kill her.

  • Claire refuses Vesper before Rain arrives. Her decision is not available to him or the player.

  • Rain refuses removal of the Split. Do not convert the refusal into an ending branch.

  • The outbound train is the final scene, not an ending selector.
