Roxana

Roxana

She can give almost anything and cannot receive without feeling exposed.

Quick Read

  • Age: 27–28

  • Role: fighter, caretaker, and Rain's first home after the charge

  • Traits: Forceful Warmth / Guarded Neediness

  • Contradiction: she can give anything and cannot receive.

  • Question: Can I trust my worth when nobody needs what I provide?

Roxana uses usefulness as evidence that she belongs. Her care is sincere; its force also keeps other people from seeing what she wants. She takes responsibility for the immediate body, hunger, wound, or threat in front of her, then turns that response into protection, work, and physical action.

On the Page

  • Warm, direct, tactile, and physically immediate.

  • Feeds people and decides quickly that they are hers to protect.

  • Touches people while speaking; the other main characters generally do not.

  • Hands someone a task instead of answering a question about herself.

  • Acts on visible pain before a full explanation is available.

  • Relentless rather than serene. Her warmth has pressure behind it.

  • Anger enters through the body: a set stance, a hand already moving, a barrier or opponent met directly.

She takes Rain in before asking about the accusation. She also trains him toward Aster without admitting that need. Neither fact cancels the other.

Want, Fear, and Change

A childhood fire killed Roxana's family and scarred her arms while she tried to save both parents. Aster later became her father figure and trainer. After he disappeared, she took his surname as a vow and kept his empty lighter.

Roxana wants to be needed and known, but believes nobody leans on someone whose limits they have seen. She makes herself indispensable so belonging never has to survive her replaceability. Strength is not ease for her; it is the responsibility to keep returning when protection still matters.

The sharper test is not whether she can accept a hand once. It is whether she can remain in the room while someone else cooks, protects, decides, or carries and still believe she belongs.

  1. She appears at full fighting capability and wins an exit from the Pursuer.

  2. She accepts Vesper's steadying hand and loses the memory-network that lets her stand as she did before.

  3. In the prison, time without anyone needing her wears through the armor of usefulness.

  4. She accepts the Ghost's open hand and produces a raw spark without the lighter.

  5. Rain carries her out. Arc 4 requires her to accept what was done rather than letting the rescue settle the question for her.

  6. She tells the truth flatly over an ordinary task.

  7. Against the Pursuer, she loses exchanges and repeatedly chooses to re-enter until he empties.

  8. She burns Aster's shard and fills his lighter with her own flame.

With Others

  • Claire: Roxana meets the visible wound first; Claire needs to understand it. Each approach is necessary and each can become avoidance. Roxana is not intuition positioned against Claire's reason.

  • Vesper: both intervene through real care. Roxana spends herself while preserving the other person's agency. Vesper spends part of the other person to preserve the successful result.

  • Rain: she offers home, training, and direction. She also tries to rebuild Aster through him without explaining that motive.

  • The Pursuer: he can continue one old decision until the fuel ends. She can stop, hurt, and choose to relight. Their last fight turns repeated choice, not superior force, into the difference.

  • Aster: father figure, trainer, missing investigator, and the source of her surname and lighter. His absence remains active through what she does with his training and remains.

Empathic Burn, Undying Flame, and Starborne

Shared passive, Imprint, Deviation, and cost rules belong to World/Magic System.md. For Roxana on the page:

  • Empathic Burn: Roxana involuntarily echoes nearby bodily pain through her own nervous system. It is not emotional mind-reading. Sensitive or damaged tissue responds most strongly, so her scars amplify the experience without serving as its exclusive channel. Exact range and source localization remain unsettled.

  • Undying Flame: Aster's empty lighter produces one small real resonant flame guided primarily through Roxana's gestures. Its core resists ordinary rain, wind, and smothering while sustained, and it can ignite ordinary combustibles; secondary fires remain ordinary and uncontrolled. The base flame has negligible kinetic force.

  • Base cost: sustaining the flame heightens Roxana's nociceptive sensitivity. Her injuries, scar pain, and incoming Empathic Burn become harder to ignore and can interfere with function.

  • Starborne: the advanced expression binds Roxana's movement to the same tiny flame. Guiding it can pull, lift, pivot, redirect, and carry her body along its path. It does not heal her or restore function Vesper removed; inertia, impact, injury, and structural limits remain.

  • Starborne cost: normal pain gating is suppressed; ungated pain can trigger withdrawal, tension, and collapse (see World/Magic System.md).

  • Passive breakout: in the prison, accepting the Ghost's open hand lets her produce one raw spark without the lighter. It nearly empties her and is not a new reliable technique.

Undying Flame and Starborne are alternate deliberate modes, not independent powers used together. The star never gets bigger; Roxana changes her relationship to it.

Vesper Melts a memory-network tied to her trauma, pain, and refusal to stop. Roxana loses access to it permanently. He gains no autobiographical memory, but may inherit unyielding reflexes or behaviors without their meaning.

Visual Anchors

Roxana is compact and physically forceful. Burn scars on her arms are essential. Her warmth should come through posture, touch, practical hands, anger, and workwear rather than delicacy. The chair, lighter, and one small star-like flame are key images. When Starborne carries her, movement remains costly rather than becoming a graceful restoration fantasy.

Do Not Flatten

  • Do not reduce her to a woman waiting to be retrieved.

  • Her inability to stand is produced by Vesper's memory alteration, not a spinal injury.

  • The scars amplify bodily pain; they are not the sole channel and Empathic Burn is not emotional mind-reading.

  • Her giving is both love and armor. Do not reveal one as fake.

  • Training Rain is partly an attempt to reconstitute Aster. Never have her explain this.

  • Her anger and immediate action are practical intelligence, not evidence that she is less rational than Claire.

  • Her Arc 5 victory is renewed choice, not greater stamina or uncomplicated strength.

  • Starborne carries rather than heals. Do not let the flame restore removed function or erase injury and inertia.

  • Receiving care does not cure her or make dependence shameful.

  • Avoid frail-tragic-woman imagery and the serene disabled-sage archetype.
